Artists’ Biographies 3

Duffaut, Préfète was born on January 1, 1923 in Jacmel, Haiti. Duffaut expressed himself by painting during his unhappy childhood. He met Rigaud Benoit in the 1940s and joined the Centre d’Art in 1948. As a naïf painter, his early paintings drew from the rural life he knew. His later paintings became more fantastic and are characterized by surreal and symbolic imagery and visionary messages. In 1951, he was commissioned to paint a mural in the Episcopal Cathedral de Port-au-Prince.

Exil, Levoi was born in 1944 on the mountain above Port-au-Prince. He was one of the original members of Saint-Soleil, a community of artists which was founded by the artists Louisiane St. Fleurant and Tiga, and by the writer and painter Maude Robart.

Francois, Roger was born on October 15, 1938 in Petite Rivère in the Artibonite Valley of central Haiti. He first became a wood sculptor under the tutelage of Odilon Duperrier. Roger opened his own sculpture studio in 1956, and began to paint in the1970s. His paintings, often representing the Haitian woman, have a three-dimensional quality, reflecting his skill in sculpture. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is gaining greater value in the Caribbean.
