His mother, the internationally known painter, Louisiane St. Fleurant, was one of the five founders of the Saint-Soleil School of painting. Working and living among a family of painters, Magloire was naturally influenced by the Saint-Soleil style. His work parallels his mother’s with its naïf look, but has a stronger spiritual element and a darker, earth-tone palette. Mistira, Cheritus was born on April 26, 1926 in Petit Trou de Nippes, Haiti. Mistira came to the Centre d’Art in 1973 knowing nothing about art. He began as a helper, and then started drawing from his imagination with a piece of paper and pencil. He has developed a unique style which is self-taught. He has been married since 1956 and has 6 children—one of whom, Fritz Mistiri, is a well respected artist in his own right. Paul, Dieuseul is one of five painters of the internationally-known Saint-Soleil School of Art which began in 1973. His work is heavily influenced by the Vodou religion and his paintings are executed as if he is “possessed” by Vodou spirits. He paints what the spirits want or reveal to him in dreams. |
