![]() Artists Biographies 6 Pierre, Fernand was born July 1, 1919 in Carrefour near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began his artistic career by making decorative etchings and wood carvings of animals, and began painting upon entering the Centre d’Art in 1948. Just three years later he completed the mural, “La Visitation” in the Episcopal Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. In addition to jungle scenes and imaginary trees full of luscious fruits and abundant flowers, his work embodies the old style architecture of “gingerbread” houses still found in the country. Since the early 1970s Fernand has lived outside of Haiti. Pierre-Louis, Prospere was born in Jacmel, Haiti, in 1947, and lived to the age of 50. He began painting with the Saint-Soleil peasant community. His early work came to the attention of the famous French author, André Malraux, who promoted it in Europe. Profil, Jonas was born on July 22, 1957 in Fort Liberté near Cap Hatien, Haiti. Profil began painting at age 18 by using his school money to buy art supplies. His pastel-colored paintings are charged and fantastic statements of Haitian life. Although he now lives in Port-au-Prince, he still considers himself a Cap Haitien painter. |
