His half-brother, the renowned painter, Gérard, introduced him to the Hall of Plastic Arts in the early 1960s. By 1966, he joined the Centre d’Art, painting themes of country life, birds in blossoming trees, and Vodou symbolism. His portraits of women are Modigliani-like with long, beautiful faces and distorted, fragile necks. His paintings are serene, yet playful, and combine grace with dignity. Haitian art connoisseurs and Haitian art writers highly regard his world-famous painting. Valmidor, Jacques was born on July 1, 1955 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began painting in 1963 and quickly developed a unique style noted by striking colors and imaginative compositions combining still life and decorative design. His painting style appeals to many, and is reasonably priced in the current Haitian art market. Zéphirin, Frantz was born on December 17, 1968 in Cap Haitien, Haiti. His artistic creativity drew from an architect father and an artist uncle, Antoine Obin. By age 7, Zépherin was painting and soon selling his work to tourists on cruise ships that docked in Cap Haitien. By his teens, he was lying about his age and selling his paintings in galleries. Eventually he moved to Port-au-Prince and joined the prestigious Galerie Monnin. Zépherin’s art has strong spiritual elements within decorative and colorful patterns of animals. His paintings always have strong political or Vodou messages. He is completely self-taught, but gathers much from his reading of art. |
