HAS Haiti Timber Re-Introduction Project (HTRIP)

Haiti needs trees! As over 150,000 internally displaced Haitians flood into our service area, broader programs which aim to build and sustain a healthy environmental and economic infrastructure will prove essential to recovery efforts. Click here to learn more about how "Hope for Haiti" means trees.

Background

Ninety-eight percent of Haiti has been deforested due to logging for timber, slash-and-burn agriculture, and the cutting of trees to fill the great demand for charcoal. Haiti, once known as “La Perle des Antilles” for its lush plant life and mahogany forests, has lost all of its natural forest cover and has severely impoverished water resources.

The environmental problems in Haiti have a direct, negative impact on its people’s economic status, their health and quality of life.

Conservation in the developing world is a complex problem that requires innovative solutions. Understanding that agroforestry in formerly deforested landscapes is a promising strategy, HTRIP was developed to address environmental, economic and health need which are so desperate in Haiti.

The song you hear in this video is used by the HTRIP educational outreach team to help make the program seem more accessible to both illiterate and literate members of the population. (Please be patient, it may take some time for the video to load!)
